The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) relies on innovation to enhance the capabilities of the Treaty’s verification regime as well as to help move the Treaty closer to universalization and entry into force. As the sixth event in the CTBT: Science and Technology conference series, SnT2021 will bring together around 1000 scientists, technologists, academics, students, CTBTO policy makers, members of the media and representatives of organizations involved in research and development that is relevant to all aspects of Treaty verification.

Conference objectives:

  • To identify scientific opportunities and methods for improving nuclear test monitoring and verification;
  • To identify how scientific developments and cooperation can support national needs and frame policy objectives in support of the CTBT;
  • To broaden and strengthen the engagement of scientific communities working in test ban monitoring, including young scientists, and to enhance geographic and gender representations of these communities;
  • To support the exchange of knowledge and ideas between the CTBTO and the broader scientific community;
  • To promote the wider civil and scientific applications of techniques and data used for test ban verification;
  • To highlight the CTBT’s successful model for multilateral science diplomacy and cooperation.

Participant profile:

  • The Conference is aimed towards all scientists, technologists, academics, students, CTBTO policy makers, members of the media and representatives of organizations involved in research and development that is relevant to all aspects of Treaty verification.

Application procedure:

  1. All applicants are requested to visit our registration platform conferences.ctbto.org and apply online by 30 November 2020, 23:59 UTC at the latest.
  2. Applicants should specify the type of presentation (oral, e-poster) and the need for financial support.
  3. Applicants requesting financial support should submit their abstract together with their application by 30 November 2020, 23:59 UTC. Acceptance of e-poster or oral presentation is a requirement to qualify for financial support.
  4. State Signatories wishing to nominate experts are requested to inform the Provisional Technical Secretariat (See Point of Contact) through their respective Permanent Mission.
  5. No registration fee will be charged.

Financial information

(Applicable to PTS-funded participants only)

In accordance with the Staff regulations and rules and Administrative Directives, the PTS will provide the following:

  • A Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) that is sufficient to cover the related expenses during the Conference program;
  • The designated PTS travel agent will reserve and issue the flight ticket to the participants for the most direct and economic route. The tickets will be sent to the selected participants by PTS personnel;
  • Funded participants are not allowed to purchase their own tickets unless, under exceptional circumstances, are authorized to do so and only if it proves to be more cost efficient for the PTS;
  • The PTS will book a hotel and cover the costs for the accommodation and participants will receive their remaining Daily Subsistence Allowance on the first day of the Conference; and
  • Health and Accident insurance will be provided only for the official duration of the Conference.

Visas

  • Participants should apply for visas, if needed, at the corresponding consular office upon receipt of an Acceptance Notification from the Provisional Technical Secretariat, in order to ensure timely processing.

Language

  • The working language of the Conference will be English

Selection

  • The Conference organizers will review applications and contact applicants upon completion of the review.

Abstracts

  • The participants are encouraged to submit abstracts relevant to the objectives of the Conference. Applicants should specify the type of presentation (oral, e-poster).

Health/Accident Insurance

  • It is strongly recommended that prior to departure all non-funded participants should also acquire their own health and accident insurance for the duration of the Conference.
