DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Elisabeth Blanc (Commissariat à l’énergie atomiq
ue et aux énergies alternatives (CEA)\, France)\n\nThe infrasound Interna
tional Monitoring System (IMS) is a unique tool for atmospheric observatio
ns due to its high capacity for long-range detection and localisation. Its
development motivated technological innovation in sensors\, array station
s and automatic detection algorithms. The rapidly increasing number of cer
tified stations provided a large diversity of man-made and natural events\
, well identified thanks to their precise description. Numerical simulatio
ns\, based on revisited propagation laws\, quantified its high performance
s and variability. Data analyses then clearly demonstrated that the simula
tion uncertainties originate from the middle atmosphere variability\, whic
h controls the infrasound waveguides and is under-represented in models. U
nexpectedly\, relevant atmospheric parameters were identified in signals f
rom well-known sources such as volcanoes\, opening new remote sensing poss
ibilities. The IMS is associated to complementary networks in the Atmosphe
ric dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe (ARISE) framework\, providi
ng an improved description of the middle atmosphere disturbances relevant
both for infrasound monitoring and applications such as medium-range weath
er predictions. Today\, archived data reveals climate change effects on sp
ecific events such as icebreaking or lightning activity and a remote volca
no monitoring system is developed to provide alert to civil aviation\, sho
wing the high IMS potential for weather\, climate and civil security appli
 cations.\n\nhttps://conferences.ctbto.org/event/7/contributions/1375/
