DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Gustavo Gonzalez (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriore
s de Chile\, Chile)\n\nIn the context of the nuclear non-proliferation reg
ime\, the On-Site Inspection of the CTBTO play a mayor role for verificati
on. OSI is when Scientists from different fields and diplomats get togethe
r with a common aim: “to identify signs from a nuclear explosion”. Onl
y a perfect match between science knowledge and diplomatic skills can assu
re full success for an OSI. The crucial issue is how to prepare both to be
ready to go in to the field and interact properly using a common language
and having the same training and motivation. For this to happen diplomats
must correctly learn not only about the whole range of technologies invol
ved in an OSI but to experiment in field exercises in order to confirm wit
hout any doubt that the data arising from scientific work are reliable\, t
rustworthy and can be used for a proper decision at the political level.\n
